A lot of people think that water damage is easy to spot, and the truth is, it is in most cases. But there are times that it isn’t always easy to spot. For example, water damage in your home’s foundation isn’t always easy to find or identify, until it’s too late.

The good news is, you can minimize how much damage there is to your foundation. This involves quickly spotting the problems and addressing them as fast as you can. How can you do this if you don’t know there’s water damage that can affect your foundation? Below are six signs that you may have water damage that is affecting your foundation.

1. Water Beneath the Ground

If you’re regularly dealing with water in your basement, you’re probably feeling a bit of stress. It also means that you probably also have a problem with your foundation. Standing water will only accumulate and sit in your basement if your drainage system isn’t working properly.

2. Soil That is Overly Damp

If you think that there might be a problem with moisture, look at your soil around your home’s foundation. If it’s really wet, even when there hasn’t been rain for days, it’s very likely that there is ground water that’s seeping into your foundation.

3. Water Inside Your Crawlspace

Moisture and condensation, or standing water building up in your crawlspace is another sign that there’s something wrong with your foundation, with your air circulation, there’s inadequate insulation, or a pipe has burst. If this area is too damp, your home’s air quality is going to decline and you may notice an odor that smells musty.

4. Bowing and Sagging Floors

Many homeowners are walking on floors that are uneven for years long before they even know they have a problem. It’s possible to test how level your home’s floors are with just a ball. Put the ball on the floor. If it rolls, it could indicate a problem unless there’s a known reason that your foundation is unlevel. If you don’t know of any, you should check out your imbalance immediately. It could be due to soil erosion because of water.

5. Slimy and Moldy Patches on Your Home’s Exterior

Whenever the water left from storms and rains drains away from your home securely and efficiently, it won’t spend enough time there to impact the building. But if there’s groundwater that is pooling, it’s possible you’ll spot moldy and slimy spots on your home’s outer walls.

6. Malfunctioning Windows or Door Frames

This sign may sound surprising, but if you are having trouble opening and closing your doors and windows, and they are starting to stick, it could be related to moisture. The frames might be warping because they have absorbed too much water.

These are the signs that you should look for that could mean that you are having trouble with water affecting your home’s foundation. If you catch it soon enough, you may be able to fix it with minimal cost.
